Just bought a new laptop the other day. Right out of the box and the machine
won't turn off. Try to use the shut down through windows but the machine
just restarts, and i have to end up shutting it off manually. Seems like it
should be a simple fix but i can't figure it out.

Sounds defective. What brand/model is it? I would recommend returning it for
one that does work.

I updated to vista and everything worked fine. After a week it will no
longer shut down. I have'nt watched the entire event but when I come back to
the computer after pressing "shut down", it is back to the loggin screen. It
may have restart but I have never waited long enough next to the computer to
witness it. NOT Right!! A bug in there some where.

I had the same problem after I installed vista business edition on my hp
desktop. I got it fixed by disabling this fax modem.

Go to:
"Start">"Control Panel">"Hardware and Sound">"Device Manager"> under modems
I disableb "PCI Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP".

Don't know if it would work with your laptop. Good Luck.

I tried to disable my Modem to get my Acer to shut down properly (came with
Vista on it) but the Device Manager seems to be hung trying to disable the
device!
