All versions of Vista are available on the same DVD. If you install Vista
and do not have a product key you can simply click the Next key and you will
end up with a 30 day trial. On the next screen you will see all versions of
vista list so you can choose which you require.
In your case you already have a copy of Vista so you would need to purchase
a new product key number.
If you are unsure whether Basic is on the DVD you have, create a new
partition on your hard drive and start the Vista installation. as I say, at
the product code page do not type in the product code, just click the Next
button. See if the list of vista versions is available on the next page -
they should be. That will put your mind at rest, then simply buy a Basic
product licence.
Once you have checked to see that the DVD does what i say it does then
simply cancel the installation of Vista.
There are, as P A Bear points out in his post numerous Vista newsgroups
available which you should post queries relating to Vista in. You have amuch
better chance of getting them answered there than in the XP newsgroups.
