Melissa,
You should try to boot from CD. Usually the hp pavillion
have the capability to do so.
When you turn on your machine see the options it offers
to change the boot sequence. In some you have to change
the CMOS in others it offers the option to change the
boot sequence on the fly. Mine is an HP Pavillion ZE5170
Laptop and offers the option to change the boot order on
the fly by pressing F2.
Once you boot from a windows installation CD you may want
to try the repair process but you will need a floppy disk
with an anti-virus software installed or another CD with
it.
The last resource is actually reinstalling windows
following the same boot process from a CD.
Hope this helps,
Gui
