I have two folders on my hard drive with setup icons -
xpsp1hfm.
They have identity numbers 1251c713726315456c9d8a - and
508c74abe5927519f5e8c7979

They claim to be microsoft updates......are they?

Do you have automatic updates turned on and a constant
internet connection? If so, they are automatic
downloads.
Otherwise, if I suspect a virus, I watch the date it was
created. (To add this column: rt cl on name bar,
choose "date created".) If it coincides with the time I
downloaded a file, I usually keep an eye on them.
