How come when my programs scan files there is over 70,000
files to scan.Is there anyway to rid my system of some of
these

Microsoft has stupidly set IE to use a percentage of the hard disk to use for the IE cache.
This is wasteful and goes against the idea of a cache to begin with.

Dump your IE cache and then set the size to 10MB. That's all that is needed.

70,000 files is nothing with an older system and many programs installed.

My virus scan reports (at the end) that it has scanned over 900,000 files on
4 hard drives.

If you were to schedule a virus scan for the early hours of the morning, you
would not be troubled by all of those files..
