Hello,

I'm running XP Home. Yesterday, I was hit by a couple of
viruses. I used NAV to clean them up, but they caused
this problem: whenever I click on an executable, I get an
error "Windows cannot find 'nameoffile.exe'. Make sure
you typed the name correctly..." I found a suggested fix
(http://www.computing.net/security/wwwboard/forum/5891.htm
l) pointing me to a problem with file associations, which
suggested a .reg hack from dougknox.com. When I initially
executed this, I got an error stating that it couldn't
find evyz(something).exe. I recognized this as a file
created and run by one of the viruses, which I had
deleted. Now, when I run the .reg file it does nothing.
So, I can't fix the file associations, and I still can't
run any exe, including regedit, which would let me apply
the reg hack manually.

I'd really appreciate any help you can offer.

rename regedit.exe to regedit.com and see if that will run. If not, go
back to Doug's site and in the XP Utilities there is an 'Emergency
versions of . . .' regedit and others, which should get you round the
problem

Had the same problem, Alex. Download swenfix.com from
http://www.norman.com/virus_info/w32_swen_a_mm.shtml to a diskette. Boot to
"safe mode, command prompt" by hitting f8 during boot sequence. Place
diskette in drive. run a:\swenfix.com
