Greetings --

That dialog box should give you the option of selecting another
location from which to obtain the necessary files. If so, and if the
PC's manufacturer configured the PC correctly, there should be a
C:\i386 folder from which you can replace the files.

Following a recent virus, a prompt appears at start up:

'Files required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by
unrecognized versions. To maintain stability, Windows must restore original
versions. Insert Windows 2000 Professional CD now.'

I have the original product recovery discs (3) but these don't work. It
wants something else. Can anyone help.

Thanks for any suggestions,

to save some headaches; my answer is not the best; but
sometimes the easiest solution is to back up all important
pictures, audio files, misc data. And reinstall. Get your
antivirus software update it immediately after
reinstallation. Then start reinstalling software. When
ever i run into problems i find it the easiest solution
but most difficicult descision to make.

Thanks for your prompt reply Bruce. Unfortunately I only have the choice of
Yes, No or Cancel on the warning box. Is there another way of doing this
once the Vaio Laptop is booted up?

Thanks again, philip

You might try canceling that specific dialog, rebooting into Safe
Mode, and then running Start > Run > SFC /Scannow to replace the
files. You _should_ be offered a chance to point out the location
from which to restore the original files. Failing that, I can only
suggest that you contact Sony's tech support and ask how you're
expected to properly maintain your OS with the tools Sony has provided
with its peculiar OEM customization.
