I was told that an installation of another os and all the
applications in it are put in a 'file'. But if I install
xp pr0 (I have a universal msdn license so can install up
to 10), office 2003, norton anti virus, msdn library
October, vs studio 2003, vs studio 2005 beta, spy sweeper
3.0, nero, and assorted other utilities, that's one big
file.

Is it really stored that way? How do I defrag it? Is it
stable?

Hi Dennis

Yes, a virtual PC is normally stored in a virtual hard disk file, and
that will be a big file...:)

You can compact the virtual disk (as well as defrag from witihin the
guest pc), but you'll need to use a third party tool to "zero out"
unused sectors in the guest pc.

You can also use ntfs compression within the virtual pc guest os
which will decrease the image size

its big, youre right, and its perfectly stable and to back it up you'll need
to stick it on a DVD. i have quite a few virtual environments sitting on
this PC and they're each several gig. i work from home and its pretty handy
when work wants me to develop or test in a particular environment. they
just create a VPC image, burn it to DVD and fedex it over.
