When I am surfing the net, after a while a message appears telling me I am
low on Virtual Memory. Everything almost grinds to a halt. Is there something
I can do to sort this ? It seems to be getting worse. I clean unwanted files
regulary etc etc, but still get the same trouble.

Here's something you can try:

Open Task Manager to the Processes tab and arrange it in descending
order of memory usage. When your computer slows down, see what peocesses
are occupying the most memory. My guess is malware.

Sorry to butt in but on XP I don't see a way to sort processes in
descending order of memory usage, Task Manager seems to place System at
the end.

The message means that the pagefile is too small. Cleaning unwanted files
is a good idea, but these files have no bearing on your problem.

This sounds like malware. I would get David Lipman's MULTI_AV package.

You can sort the same way as you do in My Computer or Windows Explorer.
Click the column header of the field you want to sort on. Click it a second
time to reverse the sort from ascending to descending, or vice-versa.

Or increase the virtual memory size.

Harry, how do I increase the virtual memory size ?
If you go to the control panel and click the System box, you wlll eventually
find the place to deal with the pagefile.

I set mine to let the system manage the pagefile size.
