virtual memory trouble

for the last 2 days i have been haveing trouble with my virtual
memory, and solving the problem.i have 496mb of ram 2 hard drives, an
external80gig and internal40gig.i'm running a 1gig page file,and it
seems to be that my computer is just running off my pagefile even when
running one hard drive.
help would be appriciated thanx
