Virtual Memory #'s?

I keep getting " virtual memory running low" messages. Windows has not increased it on it's own. I know how to change it, but I don't know what # to change it to. I'm afraid to change it without some solid advice, for fear of messing something up
Can someone help

Set it to "system managed size" and see what happens.
