Virtual Memory problem

I constantly get a message saying that my virtual memory
is too low and that windows will reconfigure my paging. My
computer continues to run VERY VERY slowly with some
applications not responding at all even after the
reallocation has been completed. I notice that in the
processing running that something called SVCHOST.EXE seems
to be very high and listed multiple times. Is this the
source of the problem? Is there a way to fix it? I am
waiting for Service Pack 2, so I have not yet installed
that if the fix is there. Any help appreciated.

start--control panel--performance and maintenance,click
the system icon--click advance tab--under performance
click settings--click the advance tab on that--under
virtual memory click change--check circle next to system
managed size, after you highlighted the drive at top,if
you have more than one,do them all like this--click OK--
OK--OK--Click restart for changes to take effect button.

Multiple listings for SVCHOST.EXE in Task Manager are normal and do
not in themselves indicate any sort of a problem.

Next time you open Task Manager click twice on the CPU column header.
That will sort the processes list by CPU usage in descending order so
that the proceses using the most CPU time will be at the top.

Make a list of the half dozen or so highest CPU usage items and post
that information back here. I have 6 entries for SVCHOST.EXE on my
system at present and the most demanding of these has consumed a total
of 20 seconds of CPU time in the 12 plus hours since I booted up the
computer.

Good luck

Thank you. Here's what the Task Manager displays

System Idle Process 97-99CPU 20K Memory Usage*
CIDAEMON.EXE 0-02CPU 200K - 17,966K Mem*
CIDAEMON.EXE 0 CPU 364k Mem
NotifyAlert.exe 0 CPU 11.428 Mem

ETC. -- All of the rest are showing 0 CPU.

*These first two are changing their CPU usage - the others
are all static at 0.

I also notice in the Virtual Memory settings (under
control panel/System/Performance) that complete 608MB are
currently allocated to total page filing size for my C
drive, although the recommendation is only 381MB (I only
have one hard drive). It is set to allow the system to
manage this size itself, so I'm wondering if something is
going on that is causing it to need to set it so high.

Thanks again.

I have XP Home, but I have five SVCHOST.EXE listed in the
Task Manager:
3 that say "System"
1 that says "Local Service"
1 that says "Network"

Type
cmd /k tasklist /svc
to view what's in each one.

I don't have home. I just rely on what home uses say. Maybe 5 is fine for a home on the network. I is for Pro.
