Hi

Problems with Virtual Memor

It may sometimes happen that the system gives “out of memory†messages on trying to load a program, or gives a message about Virtual Memory space being low. Possible causes of this are The setting for Maximum size of the page file is too low, or there is not enough disk space free to expand it to that size

The page file has become corrupt, possibly at a bad shutdown. In the Virtual Memory settings, turn off Virtual Memory
(check box), exit, shut down the machine, then reboot. Delete PAGEFILE.SYS (on each drive if it exists on more than just C:), turn Virtual Memory on again, and then reboot to bring it into use

The page file has been put on a different drive without leaving a minimal amount on C:

There is trouble with third party software. In particular, if the message happens at shutdown, suspect a problem with
Symantec’s Norton Live update, for which there is a fix posted here. If it happens at startup and the machine has an Intel
chipset, the message may be caused by an early version (before version 2.1) of Intel’s “Application Accelerator.â€
Uninstall this and then get an up-to-date version from Intel’s web site

Possibly there is trouble with the drivers for IDE hard disks; in Device Manager, remove the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
(main controller) and reboot for Plug and Play to start over

With an NTFS file system, the permissions for the root directory of the drive where the page file is must give
"full Controlâ€to SYSTEM. If not, there is likely to be a message at boot that the system is "unable to create a page file.â€

See MVP Alex Nichol's article on XP virtual memory at
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm especially the section dealing with
problems.

Good luck

Hi,

i have same problem as you. The Nichols article is useful but does not address the last solution of deleting and reinstalling the Pagefile.SYS.
Please can someone give instructions on this.
Thanks

I have the same problem , where I set the paging file, and it does not change
or ,rarely, it does change, but returns to 167MB at next reboot. Currently I
have it set on custom, minimum 400 MB, but repeated attempts to set yeild
only 167 MB. I followed the instructions from Alex Nichol up to the point of
deleting PAGEFILE.SYS. A search turns up nothing, even of hidden files or
folders. I cannot delete this file if I cannot find it. What do you recommend?

I also have this problem... well actually.. cannot create a pagefile at
all.. CANNOT find a solution ANYWHERE..and believe me, I've searched,
even on all WinXP Community groups on Microsoft.
SYSTEM and EVERYONE have full control on the drive.. have administrator
rights. If at all possible I do not want to have to reinstall windows
again. Does anyone know of a registry 'script' perhaps that works??

Yes, System has full control, as does Administrators, as does the profile
from which I try to make the change.
One added detail: on System Prop., advanced tab, performance settings,
advanced tab, the virtual memory is listed as 167MB. Upon clicking "change",
the list at top of window shows C drive as having my custom size, but at the
bottom of window still says "total paging file for all drives" currently
allocated 167MB.
The main problem with this is that after 10 or 20 minutes of screen saver,
the message of virtual memory too low\increasing size appears. Five or so
minutes after that the system locks up, screen saver freezes, and only a
restart will pull it out. I have performed scandisk, defrag, cleared cookies,
run virus and adware programs, and even used a history eraser. None of this
has solved the problem, or allowed the paging file size to be adjusted.

Are you running NAV2004? ZoneAlarm?
