Upon startup, I view the "welcome" page with my "owner"
icon which must then be clicked to get to the desktop.
Is there any way upon startup to go directly to the
desktop?
There is only one user on this computer.
Thanks

Go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on or off.
Uncheck "Use the Welcome screen."

Doing this will bring up the standard sign-in box instead of the Welcome screen.
If you want that to be automated, go to Start > Run and enter

control userpasswords2

Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer."
Apply. A box will pop up for you to choose the opening account and password.
Once all that is set up, you'll go straight to the desktop with no pause for
sign-in each time you turn on your computer.

Once all other user accounts are removed (excluding guest), Windows XP
should automatically load your desktop. If not, goto Start>Run... and type

control userpasswords2

Click OK. Disable 'Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer' and specify the account you want to boot up from (if you don't
have a password, do not enter one). Restart and the changes should take
effect.
