I know how to include 'file version' in the detail view for a folder, but how
do I turn 'file versioning' on so that something actually appears in the
version column? (XP Help describes how to turn on the view, but fails to
explain how to turn on the actual function.)

Hi

Right on that bar, then select More>File version.

The programmer of the file includes that information. It is program files versioning. Look in System32 folder to see examples.

Will,
Thanks but i don't understand...your suggestion only makes File Version
appear as a column (as does my original procedure ['view\choose details\file
version], but after doing that, if I open, change, and save a file within
that folder, the 'file version' column remains blank for that file.

I also tried right clicking on the .doc, getting Windows File Properties,
choosing Custom, and setting up a custom property named 'version' with the
type "number" and the value "1" expecting this to cause an incrementing
version number to appear in that file's Explorer's new File Version
column...but it doesn't....

Hi

You're right. I've never used it before. I'll see if I can get some
clarification 4 U. Seems as though program (.exe) files have the File
Version, but no data files.

Thanks guys; guess we'll have to wait for some future version of the OS to
hopefully support document version numbering in this way...
