Hi,
Several questions.
When I play video's on my computer from the HD, it often freezes the
computer when I do something as simply as move a window.
Control+alt+delete doesn't even work so I have to power down. Can this
cause HD problems?

I think it may be due to a bad sector (or two).

And where the hell is the report after checking for errors? What do I
look for in event viewer?
Thanks.

The most common causes of reeezing seems to be overheating and memory problems.
Check to see that all the internal fans are working correctly and not clogged or obstructed.
Reseat the memory, or try 1 stick at a time.
Leave the case cover off to see if it runs cooler and stops freezing.

Try lowering the "Hardware Accelerator" setting a notch or two.
Right-click the desktop, select Properties. Click the "Settings" tab.
Click the "Advanced" button, click the "Troubleshoot" tab.

Thanks guys. Funny you bring that up. My laptoop was powering down so
I openned it up to look at the fan. The fans looked like a lint in a
dryer. Cleaned it up and runs better. But still has froze a couple of
times with the video's

How do I reseat (reset?) the memory?

The memory should be behind an access panel on the bottom of the laptop.
Some are under the keyboard or glide pad.

Here's that Notebook Cooling Pad that works great...

Oh, I know where it is. So you mean simply removing, then reinserting
it.

Those are minor issues that occur regularly and not the cause of your
problem.

Cool, thanks. Does this tell me of any bad sectors?

To test for bad sections you need to run the /r switch. I haven't run
that in a long time so I don't remember the output when /r is run and
all is ok. Did you run it that way? If so then no bad sectors.

I'm afraid I do even know what that means.

Well what command did you type when you ran chkdsk? chkdsk /f or chkdsk
/r? The /f checks the drive for errors and fixes what it finds. The
/r does /f and checks all the sectors on the drive looking for bad sectors.

I ran error-checking by right clicking on my c drive, selecting the
tools tab, then selecting "Check now" in the error checking box.

apologies, ran error-checking by right clicking on my c drive,
selecting PROPERTIES, THEN

What options did you select? There are two check boxes - automatically
fix errors which is the /f parameter and scan for and attempt recovery
of bad sectors which is the /r parameter.

Hi Rock,
I failed to mention I selct both options.

Ok, then it did a check for bad sectors and your drive doesn't have any.

Thank you Rock,
Can I ask which part of the report told you that, for futrue reference?

That takes years of experience and hard work to figure out -
specifically in this case - though - it's the lack of any mention of bad
sectors. ;-)
