I'd like to get into videoconferencing so I can stay in touch with my sons -
who are all over the country (USA). Would someone recommend some good
cameras and software? Also, what Internet speed should I have to get a
fairly good picture? I use COX cable and my average speed is about 1.5
kilobytes per second. I couldn't find a newsgroup for this subject.
Thanks..........

Try alt.comp.periphs.webcam there are many that could be more advised.

Thanks, I installed Yahoo! Messenger. Now I have to purchase a camera.
Until then, can a user videoconference with more than one person at a time?
Also, do I need earphones?

This did nothing. Is it a joke?

No.

Only if you don't want to use speakers. That said, earphones will make
it easier for the person to understand you as the speakers will create
an echo and static.

I haven't tried it but, supposedly, SKYPE is a better video conferencing
tool than Yahoo or MSN Messenger.

No, it's the way to bring up Netmeeting. That said, if you have XP Home,
I don't believe it's installed by default.

I take that back. I just tried it on a Home computer and typing "conf"
without the quotes, in Run, brings up the Netmeeting wizard.

Yahoo Messenger allows for multiple voice, typing and webcam images.. MSN
Messenger has the restrictions on how many can use voice..

Yes, you can receive pics from another webcam without having to have a
webcam set up at your end..

The best way to communicate is to use a headset, ie.. headphones with built
in microphone, available from all good computer stores..

I didn't know that. Thanks for the heads up.

I've read where the Logitech QuikCam Pro 5000 has echo canceling circuitry
and, therefore, can be used without earphones. Any feedback on this?

The Logitech webcams have built in mics, but can be raspy.. a headset is a
much better option.. Plantronics do some nice lightweight headsets with good
quality boom mics attached.. other makes are as good but tend to be heavy or
make one's ears hot..

Thanks, Mike.
