video quality

My mini-dv video I capture into Movie Maker plays back really jagged and choppy in the computer. What's wrong? I've tried even small video files (just a couple of minutes). I have a powerful computer, and lots of speed and memory.
 
Yes, I have been using firewire. some setting I must adjust? I'm selecting AVI quality because I'm editing the video and sending it back to my camcorder.
 
Ensure you have as little running in the background as possible. Turn off
such applications as Seti At Home.... and even antivirus software if it's
running in real time mode (just remember to turn it on again afterwards!)

Especially when exporting, it takes a lot of processing power and anything
else running will cause this problem.

But yes, I do have everything else disabled. I have 256M of memory. Isn't that enough? I still get really jittery video. Any ideas

I have the same problem where the captures video is jagged and jumpy.
Am new at this, could it be because I capture with a USB2 port ?
Have a brand new computer and asked the sales dude if I could capture
and burn dvd's
How can I find out if I have a firewire port ?
Excuse my ingnorance.

LeoTheBuilder, well, not knowing anything about your gear, I would only say it's not very likely your computer automatically has an IEEE 1394 ("Firewire") port; most people have to get a special card installed for that. But, it is quite likely your camcorder would have that port, though. However, me-thinks you would be aware of that certainly on your camcorder. If you do have IEEE 1394 on your camcorder, by all means, transfer everything through that.
