Video Passthrough

I have a Sony Mini-DV digital camcorder. I attach this to
my PC via firewire and have had no problems copying the
tape to my hard drive. The problem I am experiencing is
when I add a device to my camera and use my Sony as an
analog to digital converter to copy my old VHS and Hi-8
tapes to my PC. When I hit start capture, the Sony camera
thinks I am trying to capture of it and begins to play the
tape. If I take the tape out, I get an error saying no
tape in camera. My Sony is supposed to be capable of
converting this without having to copy to the Sony and
then to the PC.

Any suggestions?

I had this same problem last week, and found the answer on the Microsoft Knowledge Database Article 814835. "You cannot use digital video camera as pass-through in MM2. MM2 does not support this."

You have to download a Windows Media Component called Windows Media 9 Capture. It will allow you to capture your av-dv and then import that file into MM2.

Can't remember exactly where I downloaded the WM9 Capture from through, you'll have to do a search for it. But it works like a charm!

Thanks Sandy. Does the Windows Media Component (Windows
Media 9 Capture) work with Movie Maker or is this a
separate application?

Here is the link that talks about the pass through issue:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814835&Product=WinMovMake

And here is the link where you can download the WM9 Capture tool. It is a seperate utility, a capture window. You run your video through it and then transfer it into Movie Maker. Very simple.

Again, I can't remember how I found this information out, but it does work for me. Now if I can just get Sonic MyDVD to work properly I can get my DVD's burned.
