Video Encoding question How long to encode?

Okay, I captured my video from my camcorder 8-mm analog. It is about 40
minutes and ended up being 2 Gig. This all seems okay.

I used TMPGEnc to change various settings, etc.

After I did all this, I started to encode. What I am asking about is the
time to encode. One of my movies from start to end frame is
about...hmmm...tweny minutes. But it claimed it would take about nine to
ten hours to encode.

Am I doing something wrong. I accepted all the default bitrates. I only
changed things like the gamma, some noise reduction.

How long is it supposed to take to encode?

ECS K7S5A v.3
AMD XP 1700+
PC2100 384 MB
7200 100/133 40 Gig. HD
ATI 7500 64MB DDR

Thank you. After this encoding, I was going to take the new MPEG-2 and use
MovieMaker to create the movie.

First of all MovieMaker will NOT see a MPG file of any kind. You need to
import it as a WMV or DV-AVI into MovieMaker and then at the end, save it as
DV-AVI for the best quality.

Then use your third party software to convert it into a MPG file for burning
onto VCD, SVCD or DVD.

Won't that diminish the quality if I make an MPEG-2 a DV-AVI and then back
to an MPEG-2 for DVD?
