I have old family videos that I burned to DVD. However I would
like to load them into my computer to edit them. I would imagine I
need special software to do this. Does anyone know what reasonably
priced software I would need. I can play the DVD on the computer but
it does not actually load into the computer. I want to be able to add
captions, effects and graphics of my own. Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

You need to head over to <http://www.videohelp.com/> first.

Read how to backup (rip) your dvd in the How To section on the left
side. There are many good freeware solutions for this.

Then you can load the file into an NLE (non-linear editor) and add
captions, effects, and other graphics. VidoeHelp's tool section lists
a wide range. I haven't found any good free programs that also load the
Mpeg2 files you'll get from your DVDs. You may have to spend money on
that (I use PureMotion's EditStudio).

Then you have to author it all back to DVD format and burn it. Your
burner probably came with a program to do that and maybe even a small
NLE.

Good luck.

TMPGenc 12a does basic editing (brightness, color, size etc.)

I doubt any freeware can do this. Such things should be possible with ABC
Videoroll and Zweistein, but they are hard to find (Google this NG for
links) and I don't know if they can import MPEG-2, let alone output to it.
You may have to convert from and reconvert to MPEG-2, which will cause loss
of quality.

I use only free stuff for all of that, for instance VirtualDub for
encoding of all kinds.
Once you ripped the video files (.VOB), you can load them directly
into VirtualDubMod, which can load MPEG-2.

But a better way is to load them into DVD2AVI first and create a
"project file" (.d2v). Then get Avisynth and create an .avs file that
refers to the .d2v by the command
MPEG2Source("video.d2v")

Now VirtualDubMod doesn't need to import the file first, you can work
with w/o delay. Also, avisynth is suited to apply special features
like captions. Haven't done effects yet, though, but it might be
possible, too. Captaions can be done in different formats, I use
SubStation Alpha. There are different editors for it, but you can edit
them as plain text, too.

Granted, this is no beginner's way with all these programs and
jiggling with text files, but at the end you don't have to pay
anything for them.
