video editing software

any freeware out there that will let me capture video, then allow me to
edit it and convert it to the computer type i prefer such as avi, mpeg.
also having the codecs needed to be able to compress average size video
length onto one cd-r...or allow me to split the file into 2 avis or
mpegs evenly.

You can find Pinnacle 9 CDs at prices tantamount to freeware. I
bought one for $14.

It wouldn't even install. I the problem in several posts but
no solutions anywhere.

I gave up on it.
