How can I check my video card in order to see if I can install a certain game
on my desktop or laptop?

Best place to look would be the very first screen when the
computer is started. There should be a brief (and quick)
display showing the name of the display adapter and its
memory size. Second best place would be the Display applet
in Control Panel. Go to settings, and then advanced and
the information might also be shown there.
