Video Card Memory Question

Hi,

I need to upgrade my video card, because it only has 16MB of memory. I need
at least 32MB. Right now I think my video card is a SiS 630/730. I do have
DirectX all updated. Now I am not sure what kind of video card I should go
get, do they need to be compatible with the SiS. (I am computer illiterate,
I only know that I need more memory) and I would just like some advice on
what I should buy, or do. Thank you

Meg

No, you don't need an SiS chip-set based video card.

Any PCI/AGP video card with 32MB or greater with WinXP drivers will do.

I personally like ATI video cards.

Thank you, so I would just go find one in a store and buy that right? Sorry I
am just making sure. Thanks again

How did you discover what your Video card is?

Using the SiS 630/730 chipset you are most likely using
the on-board graphics. Have a look in the BIOS and see
if you can raise the AGP aperture size.

Well in the RUN option I put DXDIAG, then I hit the display tab, and it said
SiS 630/730 and i figured that is waht my video card is. What do you mean
BIOS? I am notexactly sure what that is. Please go on you have interested
me, lol. Thanx

Meg:

On some platforms, the video is embedded on the motherboard itself. It can either be
enabled or disabled. In addition many can partition the physical RAM between what will be
used by the Operating System and by the video card. For example; lets say that you have
132MB of RAM (approx. numbers used only for example) If in the BIOS you can partition 32MB
to the video card, the OS will see 100MB. If you could partition 64MB to the video card,
the OS will have 88NB of RAM.

That is ASSUMING you have an embedded vide card (not a plug-in PCI/AGP) and the BIOS
supports partitioning the RAM.

In addition *IF* you have an embedded video card, it would be better to disable it in the
BIOS and install an AGP video card of your choice.

BIOS - Basic Input Output System

It is code embedded on a chip that allows *any* Operating System to communicate with
whatever hardware is installed in a platform. When you turn-on a PC the BIOS code is
executed during what is known as the Power On Self Test (POST). This process will then pass
the ability to boot to the hard disk which then boots whatever OS is installed on the hard
disk.

Tied to the BIOS is a scratchpad space of RAM known as the CMOS (it stands for Complimentary
Metal Oxide Semiconductor) but all you need to know is that through a HotKey sequence or via
a setup disk, you can enter the BIOS and change or alter the behaviour of how the BIOS
works. This information is then stored in the scratchpad RAM space called CMOS.

It is via hitting the HotKey sequence that you enter the BIOS configuration page and you
could enable or disable the on-board video and the amount of RAM to partition the RAM for
video.
