Video Camera not detected, cannot add - windows XP

I have my camera connected to the 6-pin firewire port in the front of my
Compaq presario running windows XP home edition.

It will not detect and I cannot add the hardware.
I have downloaded the Canon DV driver and "DV messenger" in the hope that it
would help - no luck, cannot get the system to detect the camera at all.

I used to have this all running happily with a DV Raptor capture card on my
old PC and thought that I could do it all happily using my new pC with the
firewire. Am I missing something ? Is my camera "too old" ? any other ideas
