Less than a month ago my computer started getting really slow during the startup. It takes a really long time to load my settings once log on... VERY long considering that i have large amount of memory

I've tried: Defrag, disk clean up... even tried starting up without any background programs running. Still no change. it takes a while to shut down too.

Any other ideas? Where else should I look? If it's not due to the number of programs running during startup.. what it is?

I don't want to pay to take it in if it's a small problem.

Thanks in advanc

I experienced something like this. It turned out in my case that the hard
drive was starting to fail.

Don't know if t his is relevant or not, but I had a
similarproblem that turned out to be some sort of conflict
between Norton SystemWorks. RFemoved it and things started
back up. No, it was not because the AV was doing too much
work on boot; it would be the same even with it all turned
off.
Thjere was more, but this's all that seems relevant to
you. If you have Norton & removing it temporarily doesn't
help, come on back. Else ignore me - cannot help.

Could be a HD starting to die, a peripheral that is starting to die and
causing problems, you name it. The first - and cheapest - thing I would do
seeing you did all those other things, is to download BootVis and use
Optimise System. While it isn't a perfect answer, I have used it on 2.8Ghz
machines that are used hard but only 6 months old and still took around 10
minutes to boot into XP. After using BootVis, they were back to normal and
there were no other problems with the system.
