Hi, I was running a game (Everquest) when I was disconnected out of nowhere
and the game crashed. This evolved into my whole computer crashing.

I rebooted, and when I login, every sound in every application plays at a
very slow distorted speed!!! Everything sounds very slow. I tried installing
a new sound codec for my hardware, but this did not help. Any hints??

Well I dont think Everquest had to do with the sound problem. I think its my
computer. If it's any help I have a VIA Vinyl AC'97, and I'm on XP SP1.

The new sound codec won't help with this issue. It sounds like the
Everquest crash corrupted your sound card drivers. Get updated drivers
from the motherboard mftr. or if your computer is OEM (HP, Dell, Sony,
etc.) from the OEM's website and install them. You probably should
uninstall the old drivers first.

Well after installing a new sound driver/codec, whatever you call it, the
problem was still not fixed.

So you know what I did? Restarted my computer in safe mode. Then rebooted
normally. Problem fixed miraculously. Stupid computers. :P

No. Before I saw this post, I was going to suggest that you take a look
in Task Manager to check the use of the CPU by the various processes. I
think your machine was badly slowed by a malfunctining program after
your crash. I am not sure how booting in Safe Mode allowed to correct
the anomaly but someone may be can clarify this.
