Hi,

on one brand new laptop in the network a shared access database is very slow
(10 to 20 times slower).
All other program's are running at expected speed.
The latest service packs are installer for winXP and Office 2003.
I'm at the end.

What could be wrong.

Thanks
Bart

Dear Bart:

The end of what?

There are many possibilities. I assume some other computer across your
network is the database file server.

It could be:

- a network connection problem.

- something running on this computer simultaneously (maybe you don't know
about it. Check the Performance Monitor to see what may be soaking up CPU.)

- a time warp, where time moves more quickly in this particular office.

OK, sorry, forget that last one. What processor and hard drive speed does
this laptop have? What network connection speed? Is this a clean, new
install?

Well, if you don't know, then I certainly don't. But I'd like to try to
help. But the research is all up to you. Hopefully, when you posted, this
is what you would expect in this kind of situation. A list of ideas to try.
Please get back with what you learn.

One other possibility is the Anti-Virus software on the laptop. If it is
set up "incorrectly" it could be checking every exchange of information
between the server and the computer.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the answer.

I'm still a live and kicking and still in the same space-time as you:).

a network connection is not the issue I think because all other network
actions are behaving normal (did also an update to the latest driver of the
lan card).

Also I checked the CPU time and no other program or service is consuming
abnormal cpu time.

oh, the time warp is maybe an option, the girl in front of the laptop is
always running faster than here shadow.

Hi John, thanks for your answer.

I disabled the antivirus and all unnecessary services.
No avail

As a test, can you copy the database down to the laptop and relink to the
copy? If so, what is the performance then?

If it is really fast, then you can start looking at a network issue. You
may have a working, but faulty NIC card. You may have be using a connection
that is marginal, etc.

Hi John,

It seems a performance issue of the database. I'd like to know if the issue
only occur with this database? Does this occur with other client in the
network. If you access another shared database from this client, what is
the result?
