1by1, by a wide margin (88 Kb download, without plugins). Despite its
small size its a remarkable piece of software.
http://mpesch3.de1.cc/#1by1
"1by1 is a small, fast and handy player which is not only small: It
provides powerful tools to handle your file collection and listen to
your tracks. Directory Player (needs no playlists) · Extensive file
navigation · Full resume play (remembers last track and position) ·
ACM (mp3) and mpglib (mp3/mp2) support · Winamp input plugin support ·
Audio dynamics and stereo enhancer · Gapless/track mixing · Directory
finder (plays whole drives) · Cue sheet support · Playlist support ·
Favorites"

on some linux versions (kde) you only have to select an mp3 and it plays
from the shell.

1by1 is excellent but IIRC Foobar2000 uses fewer resources/memory.

You remembered incorrectly. I just checked the RAM use with 3 and 10
Mb mp3 files.
1by1: 5.7 Mb - Minimized: 0.9 Mb
Foobar2000: 7.2-7.3 Mb - Minimized: 2.1 Mb
(No difference in processor use noticed)

I stand corrected. Thanks for the memory jog :-)

I tried several resource friendly mp3-players, including Foobar and 1by1.
They all worked fine and fast on my old system, I went for the one that
fits my needs the most, and am a Billy-user for over a year now:

Hi Azzman,

Billy looks like a great piece of freeware. Thanks for telling us about
your experience.

Have fun!

Apropos of that:

My 1by1 player used to use ACM for mp3 files, but now it doesn't. I may
have screwed up Windows, with LitePC etc. As I recall, I had a tough
time finding an ACM that works (Win98SE). Now I can't seem to find one.

I did some Googling and downloading, no success yet.

(I was referred to http://www.mpex.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=17 ;
haven't yet succeeded there)

Thanks,
Sheldon

It also plays flac, ape, ogg, wav, cda, midi, shn, mpc, aif and other
sound files, provided you have the WinAmp plugins. It has been my
default music player for ages.

Hi Q,

How does one go about adding WinAmp plugins? I'll add this to the
article if it's not too complicated.

Very simple. You put them in the 1by1 folder and 1by will recognize
them. You'll see the list of decoders if you Click in 1by1 on
"Settings" and then on "Decoder". Currently I have:
In_Aif.dll
in_ape.dll
in_CDReader.dll
in_flac.dll
in_midi.dll
in_mp3.dll (you don't really need this to play mp3 files)
in_mpc.dll
in_shn.dll
in_vorbis.dll
in_wave.dll
in_wv.dll

To be found with a search engine.

Hi Querulantus,

Re: http://freewarewiki.pbwiki.com/OneByOne
I updated the article with your tip. I'm wondering if you would be kind
enough to zip up all those in_xxx.dll's and send them to me. I'll host
them at the wiki and provide a link in case anyone wants to download
them while reading your tip.
