i have got cable internet with a speed of 100mbps but when i look at
the graph of network utilization in the task manager window, it shows
only 0.05 to sometimes 0.17% net.utilization? can anybody explain, how
this occurs?

You got a cable internet using cable modem with a speed of 100mbps ?
WOW ? are you running a data centre over there ?

most cable modem downstream capability is upto 8mbps ONLY
therefore 0.05% looks normal. [ 8 / 100 == 0.08 ]

well bob, i dont know much bout this net stuff. but when i see in task
manager, a coloumn 'link speed ' shows 100mbps (even 'local area
connection status' shows speed of 100mbps.) and 'network utilisation'
shows only 0.03$ to sometimes 0.1%.
so hows so less net.utilization?

The link to which link speed refers is the cable between your PC and
your cable modem:

PC<======>CableModem<=======>ISP
link cable

Your link (a/k/a LAN) is capable of 100 Mb/s, but the net actual datarate
between your PC and your ISP is constrained by:

1. the cable; typically limits you to 1-3 Mb/s downhill (ISP to PC),
and far less uphill

2. your applications; when you are not browsing/emailing/etc'ing, your
net utilization should be near zero - indicating that you are not using
the link at all

thanx for the info bob, but can i do something to increase the
percentage of network utilization?

For downloads on cable, you are limited by the cable. On my cable,
downloads are limited to 3 Mb/s, which means 3% of the 100 Mb/s NIC
on my XP PC. 3%, minus some overhead loss, is the absolute best
I can do. If you want to do better than that, you should cancel
your cable connection, and step up to a direct DS-3 (45 Mb/s) link;
but be prepared to pay roughly 3 K$US per month.

As the NASCAR guys say: "Speed costs money. How fast do you want?"

thanx bob for the information and ya, i guess the cable is quite
enough for me. 3k$us? well i cant afford it. moreover whatever
download i do ,its on sunday, cause my net is free on sundays.(today
there is only 0.0002 $ in my account i.e. 1 indian penny, but still i
could have used internet for full day ). so i m cool with cable. ;-)
