I was trying to back up files from a failed XP drive to
another XP machine by installing the "bad" drive as a
slave drive on the good XP machine when it saw the bad
drive as the c drive and the good XP drive as the F drive.
After backing up the necessary files from the bad drive to
the good on(in a new foler on the good drive)I ran into a
very strange situation. The good XP machine will no longer
boot unless the bad dive is installed in the good XP
machine as a slave but seen as the C drive. Please help me
without having to re-install the OS on the good machine.

Have you tried an in-place repair installation without the bad drive
installed? I am not even sure this will help. This is what happened:

When you installed the "bad" drive, it was seen as the CO: drive by your
system. Windows XP requires that C: be your boot drive and that the OS is
installed on that drive. This caused windows to make your "good" drive F:;
and you cannot boot off the F: drive. Windows XP will not let you rename
the boot drive to other than C:, so unless a repair works, you will have to
wipe the good drive and reinstall windows. Live and learn. Next time make
sure that the drive you are copying from is installed as a slave (non
master) on the secondary IDE channel.

Cant the good drive be made bootable by adding MBR with
PM7? Not sure of what-all is in 'front' of XP bootable.

Or I think u can boot from any drive with
PQBOOT/BOOYMAGIC in PM7.

In either case DOS must be loaded & DOS vers run.

Any advice given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS (Normally, Usually, Generally, Sometimes :)
