Everytime I try to connect using my dsl modem, an icon for a lan connection
shows up. It shows it with limited or no connectivity. This computer is not
on a network. If I disable the lan connection, I cant connect at all.
Anyone have any idea how to solve this?

Thanks
Joe

First learn how to use a News Client to access News Servers.

Microsoft is

news://msnews.microsoft.com

Once you know how to use a News Client you will also be able to access the Verizon PRIVATE
support News Groups. The following is pertinent to you. The following URL will take your
default News Client to Verizon's News Server and the 'adsl' News Group. Note that whiles
Microsoft needs no authentication to access their News Server, Verizon does. It needs you
to enter your Verizon Account and Password.

Now to answer your question...

If you use a Cable/DSL Router such as the Linksys BEFSR41 then the Router, not the PC, will
make the PPPoE connection to Verizon and NO Verizon software is needed on any LAN nodes.
The device will act as a simplistic FireWall to protect you from hackers and Internet worms
and it will allow you to share the one Verizon Internet WAN address with up to 253 LAN
nodes. You can also get Cable/DSL Routers that have full FireWall capabilities built-in.
There are many other advantages to such a device as well.

solve what ? this computer IS on a network. it is on the internet. it may
not be on a local network. internet communications is done through the IP
protocol, which is a way to communicate on a network.

a dsl modem will connect to the pc by one of 2 means usually, a LAN
connection via an RJ-45 jack/CAT5 cable, or by a usb cable. either of these
option's constitute a network connection with network drivers installed and
running in order for it to work.

I know the computer is on a network and my dsl modem connects through the
CAT5 cable. In the system tray, theres to icons for a network connection.
One is the dsl connection which stays connected at 100mbs. The other says
its a lan connection and it has limited or no connectivity. Since I have
noticed the icon saying there is limited connectivity my computer has slowed
down. I was wondering if there is anything I can do about it or if it is
normal and should be there.

well that's a little better explanation of what you see. since you're not
on another LAN, it sounds to me as though you have another LAN port on
your PC, either a card or built-in on the motherboard.

if it is a card, you can un-install it thru the control panel-system-
hardware-device mangler, then shutdown your PC, and physically remove it
from the PC.

or.....if it's a built-in, un-install, then restart, go into the bios
screen and disable the on-board adapter there.

or.....you could also try to just disable it in the 'Network
Connections' properties.

Hey Joe....Look for my post on 1-22-2005 with replies up to 1-24...A fella
named C-R gave me some advice that worked very well for this problem...Read
the posts there and I think you'll find the help you need...It is an SP2 bug
that invalidates portions of your IP address that causes this glitch....hope
this helps....PS>>if you're having a hard time finding the post, just do a
search for LAN no connectivity

wtf are you talking about, SP2 bug

install SP2 and don't look back

THE SKY IS FALLING

Have similar issue on DUN style connection to dsl. Here's
what needs to be done. In Network Connections, RC the
Connection to DUN ISP. Use properties to deselect the
"notify me when connection has limited or no connectivity"
Apply and OK.

DO NOT disable the Network Connection. Adjust the "Manual
DUN style connection"

Well at least all you users know you can totally disregard all the future
posts from the flamin' IDIOT "(e-mail address removed)" now...the sky already
fell...on your head and caused brain damage Aaron...
