Call Verizon and ask them about how to set up the computer
without their software. They will most likely tell you that this
cannot be done, but tell them that's not true and that Jim Carlock
said so.
They will probably laugh, and insist that it can't be done, but
I assure you that it can be done. The way the DSL modem
connects is it's a modem, and the modem connects to their
phone line. You connect to the modem through either USB
or networking cable (Ethernet). If the connection through
Ethernet cannot be performed, then you probably have
something wrong with your line. Pick up the line and see if you
hear any external noises on it. I've heard clicking and things
in the past that should never be heard and if you hear such
noises on the line, tell them about it and they will probably run
some tests. Sometimes their tests tell them everything is okay
and you'll then have to insist that everything is not okay.
They will give you some line about if the problem is within your
home, you'll be responsible for the cost, and they'll agree to
send someone out to help you.
Hope that helps in some way.
