Varying column widths

Is there any way, for example, to have certain column widths from rows
1 to 40, and then have different widths from rows 41 on? How about
some way of freezing what's above and then having different widths in
the information below?
 
Not really.

You could use merged cells (format|cells|alignment tab|check merge cells).

But merged cells cause lots of other problems--sorting, copy|pasting...I
wouldn't use them unless I absolutely had to.
