I use a computer on a college network all using Windows XP Pro. version 2002
Sevice Pack 2

I have been given many rights including read- write privileges for the
Windows XP Pro registry.

On many college computers I can exercise these rights without any problem.

However on quite a few computers I have only limited rights although my
profile should allow me more rights.

The following has been observed .

1. Computers where the rights are allowed.

The System Properties Box Has TWO rows of tabs.

In one row these are System Restore , Automatic Updates , Remote in that
order

In the other row these are General , Computer Name , Hardwre , Advanced in
that order.

Clicking the Computer Name tab the Network ID and Change buttons are NOT
greyed out and fully functional.

2. Computers where my rights are NOT allowed.

The System Properties Box has only one row of tabs which are :-

General , Computer Name , Hardware , Advanced , Remote in that order

Clicking the Computer Name tab the Network ID and Change buttons are greyed
out and Non- Functional.

Any ideas at all anybody ?

Possibly the computers are in different OU's with different computer
policies applied.

Thanks again for the quick response.

Out of curiosity - Why should the System Properties box appear different as
stated above? In this case the Automatic Updates tab is missing for the
limited rights computers.

Because a group policy has been applied. Group policies are a key component
of mangaing a network with Active Directory. It allows the administrator to
control what happens on which computers and users.
