I have recently attempted to ubdate internet explorer by installing
I-net explorer service pack 1 from MS updates.
after the download it started to install then i recieved a message saying
can not continue because of a missing file re run set up.
I have tried doing that and still i have a missing file.
So finally i gave up trying to update internet explorer, Now whilst i am
working away on my computer i am getting a box popping up with
Explorer error please save all documents. when i close the box
all of the icon and task bar vanish forcing me to pul the plug to enable me to
reboot.

Has any one got an answer to this with out me having to reformat my drive and
lose valuble files?

Hi,

To resolve this behavior, see if the Show Desktop Icons feature is checked
off:

1. Right-click the desktop.
2. Point to Arrange Icons By.
3. Click Show Desktop Icons.

OR

1. Click Start ->Run.
2. Type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
3. Select the OK button.
4. Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
5. Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.

OR

1. Click Start -> Run
2. Type the following command
3. "rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%windir%\inf\ie.inf"
4. When prompted for the CD, Insert the windows XP cd

Hope this helps ...... :)

Hi,

The reason why you get "Error" Installation failed is that you have typed
half the command.
Please type the full command
from "rundll32.exe ..... till..... ie.inf"

Try again from the Start -> Run menu:

"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
C:\Windows\inf\ie.inf"

Note: I have replaced the parameter %windir% with C:\Windows assuming that
XP is installed on C Drive in the Windows FOLDER.

You may be asked to locate a file (iEXPLORE) which should be under the i386
directory on the XP disc.

If this does not help please repair you XP by the following.

Note: For this method you need to have your retail copy of Windows XP.
Recovery disk of XP will not help.

Repair Windows XP
==================
Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.

Hope this helps ...... :)
