I recently started work at the church and when I went to update the windows
XP Professional system on one of the new computers I found it was a pirated
copy. It updated now to include update to SP2 but has now stopped allowing
logon at all. When a profile is clicked to logon it brings up an error
message saying something to the effect that it has an Authentication problem
then goes back to the logon screen without loading the selected profile. This
is the same for all profiles. I have purchased a copy to install but I need
to know how to do it without losing all the data that is on the machine as
well as the other programs. Do you know how to go about this. Please help me.
There is a lot of very important information on it.

And this was the only answer so far.

There may be other ways, but my suggestion would be to boot into "safe
mode", but hitting <F8> several times during the startup procedure - once
started, you should at least be able to backup and/or copy all the important
information. Once done, either do an upgrade or repair installation using
the new CD/key you have purchased - hopefully all will be good, at worse,
you'll need to reload all the applications and the important information
files you backed up.
Good Luck and may the Guidance of the Lord help you through this difficult
task.

I contacted Microsoft and they said that booting into safemode and then
changing some files in the registry would allow me to save the rest of the
setup and files on the machine while making the copy of XP legal by putting
in the new and genuine serial number. Unfortunately I was not at the machine
when I called in and so they would not continue to tell me how to do it. Can
anyone assist me in this since now I know for a fact there is a way to do it.
Time is of the essence now. Please help. Does anyone know what and how to go
about the procedure Microsoft was speaking of.

And that's the correct answer. Here's an url that will help you do a
repair install correctly:

I doubt very seriously that any guidance from any Lord will be helpful
with this routine task.

One option is to call Microsoft when you're at the machine. Another option
is to follow the steps in this post by MVP Carey Frisch.

-----------

Please follow this simple troubleshooting procedure:

1. Download and install the WGA Diagnostic Tool
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062

2. After running the WGA Diagnostic Tool, click on the "Windows" tab and
then click on "Copy to Clipboard".

3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the "WGA
Validation Problems" forum and paste the results of the WGA Diagnostic
Data in a detailed post:
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx?SiteID=25

4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and recommend
an appropriate solution.

------------

And here is another option, similar to Admiral Q's response.

First make sure there is a full and complete backup of important information
on the drive. If you don't have that, then install the drive as a slave
drive in another XP or Windows 2000 computer, then copy the data. There
should always be a full and complete backup of all data. Data loss is an
issue of when not if.

After that do a repair install. This _should_ keep programs and data
intact, however sometimes things don't go as they should. That's why you
need to backup the data first. If for some unusual reason the repair
install doesn't work then do a clean install. Programs will need to be
reinstalled from the original media (there should always be original media
on hand for any installed programs), and restore the data from the backup.
