Vaio Notebook Shuts Down

While vacationing at Lake Tahoe, my notebook would shut down for no apparent
reason whether I was online (via modem) or not. It seemed to do it when I
was running an intensive process, i.e. Ad-Aware, and other programs that
did a lot of searching. Back in Phoenix everything has been OK til today
when I was running Ad-Aware before installing XP SP2. Same thing. I have my
power scheme set to "Always On" and "Never" (shut down, etc.) in all
subsequent AC categories. I thought it might be an overheating problem or
the high altitude, but since it did it again today in Phoenix those
conditions are ruled out.

Your not alone as I have also a Vaio Laptop....with SP2 installed and guess
what my system went down today. Didnt think much of it so just rebooted.

An Addendum to My Post:
I haven't yet INSTALLED SP2, just getting ready to. Seems like it COULD be
a power supply issue. My first guess at Tahoe. Had my husband test the
receptacle with his tester, no polarity problem only, and tried other
receptacles. But back in Phoenix it's still happening.

And here was me thinking I had the only Vaio that did this (model PCG-FXA48).
Mine shuts down whilst on battery power after about five minutes of
operation. The ONLY way to restart it is to connect the power cord - not
possible in situations that I bought the laptop for - operating away from
power connections! Incidentally, this has only started to occur since
upgrading to Windows XP SP2. Previously I could enjoy full battery usage
with no problem. I have contacted Sony and they only refer me to the standard
"ensure you have set the power options to ... in the control panel" and "make
sure you have the latest updates..." response. Since this is happening to a
number of users since installing SP2 I assume the problem is of windows
making so come on Microsoft hold your hands up and offer a solution.
