Hi,

I am looking for an uliity I can use to set the default shell in Windows
without having to edit the registry. I know one comes with Litestep, but
that one only sets Litestep or Explorer as shell. I would like one whereI
can set the shell to any exectable I want to use. I know it exists, but I
am not able to find it at present. Help greatly appreciated.

the one that comes with litestep can be used to set any shell as the
desktop default (such as progman.exe)

It says: "don't use with Windows 2000" so you better not use it with XP
also.

I've been using it with XP for nine months. No problems. Works perfectly
as it's intended to do. I wouldn't have recommended it otherwise.

Maybe you were lucky. If I read those kind of statements I wouldn't even
try the software, just to be sure. But it's great if it works for you.

It's not a matter of luck or working for *me*, Gert. Shell-switching's a
pretty limited function. It works on XP or it doesn't. In this case it
does.

It’s just changing one value in the registry. No biggie, but easier having
a utility for it.

What version of ShellOn are you running?
1.88

Is the ShellOn in the link above the same as the ShellOn in:
http://dx13.co.uk/programs/shellon/index.html

I think that must be V2.

If so, it's now at V2 and is 2K (hence XP) compatible.

Yes. I tried version 2. It has succumbed to a slight attack of featuritis
and offers to do a lot of things that I either don't need from a simple
shell-switcher or do in another way. Version 2, if I recall correctly, is
described by the author as a "Shell Management System" or some such phrase.
I agree; it's a lot more now than just a shell-switcher and exceeds my
needs. The supposed "explorer bug" in 1.88 that was assumed would give
rise to problems under XP doesn't do so, in fact. It may do under W2000.
