i am looking for a utility, free preferrably, to copy files from an internal
hard drive to an external hard drive for backup purposes. this utility must
be able to copy the files even if they are locked or open. i have tried the
win explorer and also robocopy via command prompt and it will stop the
copying process at that point.

thanks for any suggestions!

Try xxcopy -- it's a super set version of windows xcopy, and also creates
disaster recover image and diskettes. xxcopy.com
