What I need to know is does the product activation grace period get reset
when I restore an XP Home image to a computer? If not how can XP home be used
in a test lab where machines are routinely imaged. No image runs for more
than a week before being imaged again.

You have a 30 day grace period before you are required
to activate Windows XP. If you reformat the drive and
reinstall XP, then the 30 day grace period begins again.
There is no need to activate Windows XP if you are
re-imaging the drive before the 30 day grace period ends.
