In Windows XP, when I have 2 columns of icons on the desktop, if I go to the top of the second column, click the first icon, hold the shift key, and click the bottom icon all the icons in both columns get selected. I want to be able to just select the one column, but so far the only way to do it is to use the ctrl key and click the icons one at a time.

I can't figure out how to modify this function. Any help?

Easy. Just click and hold with the left mouse button to the left or the right of the first icon and drag the mouse pointer over the whole first column of icons.
