Using Symbols as Footnotes Question

Hello.

I have a user in our firm that would like to enter her footnotes as
incrementing asterisks for each page. Thus, if you had three footnotes on
page one, they would be marked the first*, the second**, the third***. Then
on page 2 it would restart by being first*, second**, etc.

Any ideas if this is something you can do in Word 2003?

Thank you,
Elf

All versions of Word can use the conventional series of symbols (*, †, ‡, §)
and restart on each page (Insert | Reference | Footnote: "Number format").
If you really want multiple asterisks (which are not conventional), you'll
have to use "custom" footnotes.

Thanks, Suzanne. That's pretty much what I told her, but she's insisting
that it used to be automatic in Word 2000 with the multiple asterisks. I
don't think so, but who am I to argue without some research first. : )

Cheers,
Elf

I skipped Word 2000, but I can't imagine it would be different from any
other version, and I don't believe the asterisk series has ever been
automatic. OTOH, I pretty much use only numbered footnotes, so perhaps
someone else here can correct me.
