Using Recovery CD + SP 2.

Hello to all,
I have 2 questions:

My laptop came installed with XP Home plus a Recovery CD.
The laptop is at the moment not being used because of an infection which
appears to be coming back everytime. Antivirus software isn't being that
helpful :-(
My question is, if I should use the Recovery CD to restore the laptop to
its original state (from the factory), am I free from the virus? Is it the
same as having formatted the drive and XP again installed?

Second question is: I updated (before the infection) to SP1 with most of
the hotfixes. With SP 2 now out, can I update after this Recovery directly
with SP 2 or firstly with SP1 and then SP2.

Thanks.

Hi

'Recovery' CDs from different suppliers may have different ways of using
them to reinstall XP. Some CDs will give you the option to 'Repair' XP,
others will wipe the hard disk/partition clean, so that you can start from
scratch again. You'll have to have a look at the documentation that came
with your PC to see how your 'Recovery' disk works.

When you have reinstalled XP, you can install SP2 without having to install
SP1 first, as SP2 is cumulative and includes all previous Updates.

Most recovery CDs start out by formatting the disk like it or not (so
make sure you back up data). If it does that you will be virus free.
But there are some that offer the option to just repair the system (Sony
I have seen provide such a disk) - that would not clear it out.

Go straight to SP2, which includes all SP1 as well. Get one of the CDs
of SP2 and run it first thing after the recovery before ever connecting
to the Net
