I just installed WindowsXP on the computer at American
Legion Post 94 in Valparaiso, IN. I put it in a new
folder named WinXP and did not touch the Windows 95
version installed previously. The problem is that we can
no longer run Excel or Word even though the executable
files still exist in the old Windows folder. An error
message pops up stating that those programs have to be
reinstalled from the original source. As we do not have
access to the original source, is there any other way of
having XP run those programs (short of having to purchase
OfficeXP)?

Hi Darlene,
If you chose not to upgrade your current version of
windows, the previously installed applications will not
run correctly. You can either reinstall those apps
(which seems to not be an option) or upgrade over the old
version of the operating system to allow them to run
correctly.

First of all, it is unlikely that you will have good results running
Windows XP on a machine that ran Windows 95. Although others have done
it, I wouldn't suggest running XP on a machine that had less than a
PIII 600 with 256MB of RAM. Secondly, if you have to run XP on the old
machine, do a clean install; i.e., format the hard drive and then
install XP. You will need to buy programs in any case. You can get a
good free office suite at www.openoffice.org.

Malke,

I have been running XP Professional for about a year-and-a-half on my
Toshiba laptop which is a mobile PIII 450 with 192MB main memory.
Performance is excellent and it has been incredibly stable.
