Using old Word documents in Word 2003

When I open my old Word files in Word 2003, I noticed the document has changed. It replaces any " to @ and ' to an = sign. How can I properly convert my old documents using Word 2003 to its original format?
 
How old? Do you still have the same fonts installed?
