None of the newsgroup suggested fixes that I have been able to try have
fixed my IE6 unexpected shutdown problem. The only fix that I have not tried
is to reinstall XP because I have an OEM restore disk. IE6 repair method 2
does not work and my MSHTML.DLL file is 6.0.2800.1226 dated 7/13/03. The
file listed in 811812 is an earlier version, 6.0.2800.1163. Henri's
suggestion about unchecking "enable third party extensions" does stop the
shutdowns but I can not find any cause.

I use SpyBot S&D, HijackThis, CookieWall, BHODemon, and AVG. I also check
for parasites at aumha.org. So far, this set of software has not found any
problems.

As a result, my solution is to operate with NOHOSTS. This stops 99% of the
shutdowns. The others are due to misspelling an URL and I can live with
that.

Dave,
"Henri's suggestion about unchecking "enable third party extensions" does

This clearly indicates a bad BHO ........
Go to: http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware] or download direct (below):
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates: "hijackthis.log")

Next, go to the below location:

Sign in, go to the "Spyware and Hijackware Removal" section.
Press "New Topic", copy and paste hijackthis.log into your new message.

In SpybotSD, Immunize, do you have Bad download blocker "Installed"?

After some testing, this was my response:

"Now it works! I uninstalled (SD) bad downloads, (SD) ie immunity, checked
the Ad Shield "block listed pages" box, and recycled ie6. No shutdowns on my
test page. Next I set (SD) ie immunity, recycled ie6 and still no shutdowns.
Then I installed the (SD) "block bad downloads" with the option to ask for
confirmation. Recycled and it still worked with no confirmation request.
Then I set it for silent blocking recycled and it is working fine.

All I can figure is that the order for AD and SD is important.

Thanks for the lead.

Dave"

Dave,
You're welcome ..... glad to see you have things resolved.
You might want to contact AdShield *if* you are using the (paid) 3.05
version.
Doug is pretty good at resolving problems ........

Mike et al,

You were correct. The problem was due to a BHO. I use AdShield as a popup
stopper and the "block listed pages" was checked. When I uncheck it and sue
the HOSTS file, I get the expected "the page cannot be displayed" message.

Why this problem started about 6 weeks ago while I have sued AdShield for 11
months is a mystery that I will not worry about.

Thanks to all for listening and helping me.
