It may take some time to get the hang of using them but you really owe it to yourself to try it.
With layers you can do so much. Like having certain layers only visible depending on choices done by the user. Divide your page up in columns and have the last column(s) wrap under the others if the browser window is too narrow (thus avoiding horizontal scroll). Try doing that with a table. Or let people personalize a page by rearranging columns/rows to their liking.
In the old days you had to use tables if you wanted to structure your page in any way, but that era is behind us and the future is here with much better means of structuring a page.

It's too bad that layers are there for you to use because using them only
leads to problems. Also do not use absolute positioning! Use table!!

I just started using layers. I like using them better than tables. I am
making the site for screen resolution of 800 x 600 but want my site to be
centered when someone with a higher resolution views my site. Right now, my
site is not centered. Take a look at my site to understand what I mean, it
is

accomplish this.
