When opening the file search function a Windows Installer
box opens and try to install Office.

Jon, check here
Search - Doesn't Work

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf
file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files
from the I386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer
Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also
click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf
folder.

Sorry, but my original entry was not very complete and
thus easily misunderstood.

I don't have a problem with the search. I think this is
what you are addressing. It works OK once I get rid of
the Winows Installer Box

Problem is when I use the search, the Windows Installer a
box opens that wants to install Office. It looks for the
Office CD and after several annoying clicks it goes away.

I found it in the event log as Event 17529 ... not sure if
this is a MS code or just something unique to my machine.

So how do I stop Installer from firing up when I want to
search for a file?

Hope this is clearer now.

Thanks for your prompt reply.
