using + at start of formula

I've noticed on a few examples of spreadsheets in the past that some
formulas were entered starting with a + sign. eg. =+A1+B1
Is there any real purpose in this or is that a leftover from a previous
method of writing formulas?

It's mind-cruft that some former 123 or Quattro Pro users can't seem to
eliminate.
